The DANB (ICE) exam is a challenging and comprehensive examination for men and women looking to enter this rewarding area of dental care. This exam is one component of the Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) exam. Those who pass this test are qualified to work in infection control.
The DANB (ICE) exam was developed by the Dental Assisting National Board in consultation with an expert team of exam administrators. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, and test takers are given one-and-a-quarter hours to finish.
The exam covers: patient and dental healthcare worker education (10 percent of the exam); the prevention of cross-contamination and transmission (20 percent); maintenance of aseptic conditions (10 percent); performance of sterilization procedures (15 percent); environmental asepsis (15 percent); and occupational safety (30 percent).
The exam may be taken via computer or on paper. Exam scores are placed on a scale of 100 to 900, with a minimum passing score of 400. There is no precise number of correct answers required to earn a passing score because versions of the DANB (ICE) exam vary in difficulty. A performance rating of low average, average, or high average is provided for each subtest. These performance ratings can be used to improve scores in the future. Exam results are not released to anyone besides the candidate.
